The build up in shops began and I am wondering how was the ‘build up’ to Mother’s Day for you, was it a day you were looking forward to, a day hinged with anxiety, one that you couldn’t wait to be over or, based on your relationship with your mum, it was a lot of unwanted hype!
For me, whilst it feels like it cant be escaped, whether its flowers being advertised for sale by the road or pubs taking bookings now! Either way I would like choice and my choice would be to be able to delete the reminder from my apple calendar. (Maybe you can do this and I just haven’t learnt how to – do let me know if there is a way!) I wonder if you had a choice would you keep it in your calendar, would you change its name, maybe to ‘me being a mum day’ or delete it altogether?
For some, Mother’s Day can feel like a time to show their love and appreciation of their mum, but for others the days running up to it and indeed the actual day, can bring all sorts of emotions and tensions that were quietly packed away after last year’s reminder. Maybe your relationship with your mum isn’t like the ones that your friends seem to have, maybe the thought of spending time with your mum and family causes you stress or maybe you your mum is no longer part of your life for a whole number of reasons.
The fact of the matter is, even what may seem like the simplest task of choosing a card could prove difficult as the words in the cards are not your words, but knowing what is going to be printed inside, may make you feel guilty that you don’t feel like that towards your mum or angry that she couldn’t be the mum that you wanted.
If you are a mum yourself, how did you feel about the build up to Mother’s Day, were you hoping to be noticed, cared for and loved or was it simply another day, where you did all the things you normally do. I am wondering during the day did your mind compare yourself to Mothers everywhere whom you may have thought were being lavishly treated and cheered – the question is, were they, or were they thinking of you being lavishly treated and cheered?
I wonder if at any point leading up to Mother’s Day did you think about You and what you may need to help You get through that day? The thought may have flickered in, “I wish I had an excuse” so I ask You the question right now, ‘What would You have liked to have done for you’?
